Coventry Schools Admissions Consultation 2018

Purpose of the consultation

Coventry City Council are proposing to make some changes to the admissions arrangements for all community and voluntary controlled primary, infant and junior schools from 2020.

Applications for school places are prioritised according to the “oversubscription criteria” in a school admission policy.
Please read the proposed Coventry Primary Admissions Policy 2020 which can be accessed in the ‘Supporting Documents’ below.

We plan to make some changes to the old admissions policy.

The changes we propose are set out below.

1. We are broadening our definition of brothers and sisters to include those children whose parents live together without being married. This will more accurately reflect and meet the needs of the families we have living in the city.

2. We have added in a new priority for children of school staff which we hope will help schools to recruit staff. It will only have a marginal impact of perhaps one or two places in any school, but it may help schools to secure the services of staff that will benefit a large number of children over time.

3. Finally we are also proposing to change our waiting list arrangements so that instead of having to apply to remain on the waiting list each term, parents will only have to apply after 31 December to remain on the waiting list for the rest of the academic year.

Please Note:
We are creating a separate policy for St Andrew’s infant school which will follow the same kinds of priorities within the oversubscription criteria as all primary schools, but will make clear the specific links to Eastern Green Junior School. This approach has been endorsed by both schools and will not require any specific changes other than those listed above regarding definitions of brothers and sisters, and children of staff and so will be subject to the consultation for those issues.
(To read the proposed St Andrew's Infant School Admissions Policy and Eastern Green Junior School Admissions Policy, please see the ‘Supporting Documents’ below.)

Details will be considered by Coventry City Council Cabinet on the 12th February 2019 and the outcome of the consultation will be included in the report to Cabinet.

The closing date for this consultation is: 11th January 2019
